I've been where you are.

Way back, I used to be a commercial interior designer. I became interested in nutritional therapy as a result of dealing with a painful bladder condition called interstitial cystitis  (IC) in 2009. This illness had a devastating effect on my life – I needed to pee every 20 minutes, I couldn’t walk to the shop or carry a shopping bag without having to lie down and sitting on a chair for more than a few minutes was agony due to pelvic pain, my abdomen was swollen, wearing trousers or anything tight fitting was impossible; I was in chronic pain and felt really miserable.

Desperate for a solution, I tried healing with conventional medicine but it had no effect on my symptoms. I began researching the role of nutrition on bladder, gut and IC health which is how I started eating better. At that time, I made the decision to give up all dairy, sugar, wheat, red meat, caffeine, alcohol, processed foods, chemicals and additives. 

If only I had known...

​Clearly, giving up all this on by own was a challenge and eventually I consulted a nutritionist to help me make changes in stages and specific to my needs. She helped me realise improving health, and recovering from IC is not all about cutting foods out - it’s also about nourishing the body with quality nutrient dense foods.

Initially I felt a bit weird, always bringing my lunch to work, being “picky” and never wanting takeaway. I was really hesitant to tell people about my specialist diet. However, I soon found the most important thing was to find substitutes for my favourite foods and it soon became my new ‘normal’. Read my full IC recovery journey here.

This is how I became interested in learning how the body works and heals. I completed a 3-year post graduate Diploma in Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy. I am a member of the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT) and the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) which is recognised by the Department of Health.

Right here, right now.

Ten years on and I’ve been able to reintroduce most of these foods and figure out a balance that works for me. I still get pelvic pain from time to time but I can happily say I am 90% healed. I have far more energy than I ever had before my illness and I feel way more in tune with my body.

​I am careful to maintain my health now as I know what it is like to lose it. I exercise (but I recognise my limits); I avoid excessive stress and eat well.

​Yes, I am only human and still have the occasional slip ups but the best thing about my lifestyle is I eat more now than I ever used to eat before. This really has become a way of life for me and I can’t imagine doing anything else.
